The Festive Edit: Craft Meets Celebration

The Festive Edit: Craft Meets Celebration

It’s the festive season, Diwali is around the corner, and we’re all gearing up to celebrate with light and love.

This time around, we crafted a special conscious clothing capsule of festive holiday attire that will help you celebrate in style sustainably – more on that a little later.

Festive and holiday seasons can often be quite wasteful times of year, so if you’re buying something for yourself or gifting someone else, here’s why choosing consciously and having a thoughtful mindset is the best path to take to make a positive impact on our world and communities.

Why Choose Slow

The festive season, similar to the holiday season, can often be a time of excess. From parties to gifting, there are ways a lot of us contribute harmfully to our environment without realising it.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, household waste increases by 25% during holiday months – this includes packaging waste, food waste, an increase in energy use and so on.

In the UK, an estimated 3 million tonnes of additional waste is created during the festive winter period.

So, although these statistics relate to holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, we can assume similar waste is occurring during Diwali.

Not only that, the fashion industry also contributes negatively:

“Many of these [festive] garments are designed for limited use and made from unsustainable fibres… leaving behind a legacy of waste long after the holiday season has passed…The volume of waste can be overwhelming, and the issue is exacerbated by overproduction and hyper-marketing tactics. According to OC&C and WSGN, approximately 10 to 30% of clothing produced annually (between 15 and 45 billion garments out of 150 billion) are never sold or worn.  For fast fashion brands, it’s economically advantageous to overproduce, while retailers use targeted campaigns to encourage consumers to buy more than they need, often capitalising on the urgency and excitement of the holiday season. Disposal of unsold clothing is left to consumers or retailers, and often they end up incinerated.”

With this in mind, it emphasises how important it is to make better conscious clothing choices during the season, whether for yourself or to gift to others.

How To Celebrate Consciously: Our Festive Edit

And so, we wanted to create sustainable wear for this special season.

The aim with this festive holiday attire is to give you classic options you can wear again and again, pieces that look elegant but are super comfortable.

Versatility and timelessness is key with any style so that it remains in a closet for years to come – so whether you’re buying from ethical clothing brands or not, remember you can choose better so that styles last longer.

Without further ado, meet our sustainable festival wear, starting with a little bit about our capsule collection story:

Diwali is a time of connection, of reunion, of joy, and of love. For this special sustainable wear, we wanted to capture the cozy magic of the season by visiting a festive home – a home filled with the golden glow of diyas, the colourful shades of fresh flowers, and the warmth of time spent with your loved ones. And Snigdha welcomed us right in.

Snigdha is a brand strategist, creative consultant & slow fashion advocate — as well as a longtime Sui supporter — so we’re thrilled to feature her in this Edit.

“Diwali during my childhood was about celebrating at home. The excitement always started a couple of days prior when we used to go buy diyas, tall candles to safely light the diyas, litres of mustard oil, flowers for rangoli and cotton for the wick along with going to the wholesale pataka market in Calcutta to get firecrackers - my favourites were the chakri, chocolate bombs and the snake.” – Snigdha

From lighting diyas to festive parties, there’s not one perfect way to celebrate, but whatever journey you’re on, these looks bring elegance to every moment while keeping you comfortable through it all.

Each new look is crafted in handwoven silk, hand and machine embroidered with nature-inspired motifs, in timeless silhouettes, here’s a closer look at each piece:

The Radiant Top is a perfect piece that will elevate any outfit while remaining a classic.

The bold purple shade of our Midnight Marigold Set reflects joyous Diwali nights.

The Golden Bloom Set is a stunning marigold yellow that’ll glow in any setting.

Have A Conscious Diwali!

We hope you choose consciously this season, whether it’s for yourself or to gift others. Choosing sustainable festival wear from ethical clothing brands also means you’re doing good in multiple ways, such as:

  • Supporting slow, sustainable craft that creates minimal carbon emissions, water and textile waste through its production.

  • Sustainable wear brands will also often use environmentally friendly packaging that avoids plastics and biodegrades.

  • Opting to wear conscious fabrics that don’t harm our environment even when thrown away.

As always, stay green and have a wonderful time celebrating!
