A guide to mindful shopping: everything you should know before you buy

A guide to mindful shopping: everything you should know before you buy

Whenever you shop for clothing, we always hope you consider every choice.

The aim of building a conscious closet is to understand what you’re bringing into your wardrobe and investing in eco friendly clothing brands.

So, we wanted to give you a guide on how to approach our sale, as well as future clothing purchases.

STEP 1: Identify your personal style.

Before you even start browsing for something new, evaluate what you already have. This will give you a better understanding of what colours you prefer and what silhouettes you gravitate towards.

It will also provide you with more solid capsule clothing ideas - specifically, revealing what pieces you are lacking and what essentials are best to incorporate into your closet to enhance what you currently have.

Everyone’s different, so whether you prefer an organic cotton sundress or sustainable denim trousers, you will, at least, have a much better understanding of your clothing wants and needs when your evaluation is done.

We also suggest you focus on curating, not craving. What we mean by that is being aware of what is trendy and in demand at the moment, so you’re not just buying into what’s ‘in fashion’, but rather choosing what’s best for your personal closet.

STEP 2: Choose fabrics that suit your life.

Depending on your lifestyle, where you live, and how active you are, the fabrics you put on your body are important to consider and will definitely inform the capsule clothing you buy!

The best fabrics for sustainable fashion are natural fabrics, especially for with sensitive skin - the more organic, the better, of course - fabrics that eco friendly clothing brands will most likely design with. Our advice is to choose natural, and we can help you understand which ones are best for you.

Organic Cotton

This is a big category because there are so many variations of organic cotton clothing due to how versatile this fabric is - so you more than likely would want a variety of organic cotton clothing pieces in your closet.

These are some general attributes:

  • It requires less water to produce than conventional cotton.

  • It is ideal for sensitive skin as no pesticides/insecticides are used in its production process.

  • It is breathable and durable - a perfect, long-lasting, comfortable fabric.

To give you a quick rundown of what variations we love to work with and why we love them:

  • Poplin - a classic, smooth fabric that is great to wear every day, but also is sleek enough to wear in more formal settings.

  • Double Gauze - this is a comfier, softer option we love using for our more casual and lounge styles.

  • Knit - a great fabric that gives you a little bit of extra warmth

  • Handspun Handwoven Cotton / Kala Cotton - these variations are a little more durable and get softer with each wash and wear, making them great everyday essentials for your closet.

  • Handwoven Organic Cotton Twill - another softer option that we love to craft lounge styles in, but also looks classic enough to wear out to cafes and lunches.

Denim

This fabric is also a cotton variation, but is definitely singular in its own right. Our own denim is crafted using a mixture of cotton and recycled cotton fibres to help us reduce our wastage as an eco friendly clothing brand.

Denim’s general attributes are the same as organic cotton other than it’s usually a little more durable, often due to its thicker weave - so it’s a great piece to wear all day in most every day settings, especially if you’re tackling lots of different errands from morning school drop-offs, grocery shopping, meeting friends and back to school for pick up.

Lyocell/Tencel

This fabric usually looks a bit more dressed up due to its flowy fall and smooth feel, so when you’re going out to brunches, dinner dates, or even client meetings, this is a great pick for those moments.

These are some general attributes:

  • The fabrics are produced in sustainable plantations to ensure resources are used efficiently, leaving little room for waste in every way possible.

  • They are derived from wood cellulose fibres, which means they are renewable and biodegradable.

  • The fabric resists wrinkling.

  • Breathable, lightweight, and comfortable.

Linen

Linen is another super versatile fabric and can be worn in casual settings as well as look super elegant - it’s definitely our pick for office days or for days on the go.

These are some general attributes:

  • The fabric is derived from flax plant fibres, which means it is renewable and biodegradable.

  • Super breathable with high moisture-wicking abilities to keep you cool in warmer seasons.

Hemp

Hemp fabric lasts! Due to its super durable nature, it makes a great long-lasting closet essential, so it’s perfect as a classic staple silhouette. If you’re someone who prefers easy go-to pieces, styles you can pick up and pair without a second thought, and can always rely on, something in hemp will benefit you for many years.

These are some general attributes:

  • As we said, it’s super durable - in fact, it’s 3x stronger than cotton fibres.

  • Can be a little stiff at first if it’s a thicker weave, but it gets softer with every wash and wear.

  • It’s microbial and UV resitant

STEP 3: Choose silhouettes you know you’ll wear.

Classics are essential and should be the priority for a sustainable wardrobe - those being pieces that can be mixed and matched endlessly.

These are the key silhouettes we think everyone should consider for their capsule clothing closet.

A button-down shirt or casual top that you can see being paired with everything from denims to skirts to possibly being layered on dresses.

A comfy pair of bottoms you don’t think twice about and know you will feel at ease in every time you put them on, whether that’s a midi skirt, a pair of shorts, or wide-leg trousers.

A breezy dress, from a relaxed maxi to an organic cotton sundress, they always helps you feel light on your feet.

A stand-out statement outfit you can wear for your celebrations! If you’re going out with friends or celebrating an anniversary, there’s always room for a few pieces that make you feel extra good, from a flattering mini dress to a bold co-ord.
